Installing Ubuntu on T60 with XGL and Beryl

Just got Beryl working on my T60 laptop. However, shutdown and reboot are now missing from the choices in the menu. I have to log out, then shutdown from the login screen.

Have you got a clue why?
Ah this will be quite handy for me once I get off my lazy butt and install Ubuntu on my T60.

As for Lee's comment, I had the same problem when I installed XGL before and I still don't know how to fix it either.
Ill look into a fix today. Hopefully I will have an answer for you. Sorry it took me so long.
A good place to look would be /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf, but make sure you make your override changes to /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf-custom.

Nice tutorial Matt. I installed Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (SLED 10) this quarter on my laptop, and with that, XGL is real simple to setup. My install consisted of:

1. Install SLED
2. Register with Novell
3. Download updates, which includes video driver, and XGL stuff.
4. Reboot

However, I still have the same problem that Lee mentioned above. Before, I would choose logout from the Gnome menu, and it would give me the option to restart or shutdown, but now it only allows me to log off.

I usually just log in as root and type "init 6" to reboot, instead.

Hmmm, Linux install that "sounds" easy.. I think i will try it on my laptop when i get back to germany.
Beryl is nice. I just can't get enough of seeing my windows go up in flames when I close them.
One thing you might want to keep in mind when you are creating the start script for XGL. When I ran my script it completely killed my font settings for Gnome. The fonts in Firefox were huge and ugly, but I found out that you only have to change the last line to keep Gnome's font settings.

Instead of having:
exec gnome-session

use:
exec /etc/X11/Xsession gnome-session

This will start up Beryl using the Xsessions settings and then passes the gnome-session command as an argument. So far I haven't had any problems and my fonts now stick to what I set them to in Gnome.

i have HP laptop using window XP, 1G RAM, processor 1.86 Intel, can i used this?
Thank you smerrel for the catch. I was wondering what the issue was with my fonts on installation and didn't realize this was the case. Nice!
